New York City Tour in Advent

from the Plaza Hotel to Macy's

From the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, to the Christmas market at Bryant Park, to Christmas shopping at Macy's. With stories and history, this New York city tour takes us through the Advent-decorated Midtown.

Midtown is the part of Manhattan that came into focus from the middle of the 19th century. Before that, it was pure nature - almost, anyway. There were a few farmers who had their farms up here. And the first botanical garden in the USA opened in 1801 on the site where the Rockefeller Center stands today. The rich and beautiful built their villas along 5th Avenue. With Rockefeller, the first Christmas tree came here in 1931, and with the rich came the churches and luxury shops that took up the Christmas tradition. So there is a lot to tell. Both about individual families and about new traditions.

Christmas with the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers

This New York walk includes the stories of the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers, as well as the conflict between venerable New Yorkers and the "nouveau riche" who had to buy their place. In this metropolis, (almost) everything has always revolved around money. On the tour through Midtown, we can see in the truest sense of the word what can be achieved and built with it. Not that everyone here has or has an abundance of money. The gap between rich and poor is one that has always characterized New York. This will also be discussed - especially at Christmas time.

The Christmas walk through Midtown starts at the Plaza Hotel, leads along 5th Avenue to the Rockefeller Center with its Christmas tree and St. Patrick's Cathedral, then we continue to the Grand Central Terminal, the Public Library and Bryant Park with the typical Christmas market and ice skating rink. From there we take a short detour across Times Square to Macy's. We pass the most famous and beautiful Christmas decorations and installations. And finally, Macy's department store beckons with lights, Santaland and Christmas splendor for shopping.
